Traits
- Aura of Flames: At the start of each of Pyrathrax's turns, each creature within 20 feet of him takes 10 (3d6) fire damage, and flammable objects in the aura that aren't being worn or carried ignite.
- Fire Form: Pyrathrax can move through a space as narrow as 1 inch wide without squeezing. A creature that touches Pyrathrax or hits him with a melee attack while within 5 feet of him takes 10 (3d6) fire damage.
- Magic Resistance: Pyrathrax has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
- Regeneration: Pyrathrax regains 20 hit points at the start of his turn if he has at least 1 hit point. If he takes cold damage, this trait doesn't function at the start of his next turn.
Actions
- Multiattack: Pyrathrax makes three Flame Strike attacks.
- Flame Strike: Melee Weapon Attack: +15 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 25 (4d8 + 7) fire damage. If the target is a creature or a flammable object, it ignites. Until a creature takes an action to douse the fire, the target takes 10 (3d6) fire damage at the start of each of its turns.
- Molten Burst: Pyrathrax hurls a glob of molten rock at a point he can see within 120 feet. Each creature within a 20-foot radius of that point must make a DC 24 Dexterity saving throw, taking 42 (12d6) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. The area becomes difficult terrain until cleared.
- Inferno (Recharge 5-6): Pyrathrax exhales a devastating blast of fire in a 60-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 24 Dexterity saving throw, taking 63 (18d6) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. The fire ignites flammable objects in the area that aren't being worn or carried.
Legendary Actions
Pyrathrax can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time, and only at the end of another creature's turn. Pyrathrax regains spent legendary actions at the start of his turn.
- Flame Strike: Pyrathrax makes one Flame Strike attack.
- Incinerate: Pyrathrax targets one creature he can see within 30 feet. The target must succeed on a DC 24 Dexterity saving throw or take 21 (6d6) fire damage.
- Eruption (Costs 3 Actions): Pyrathrax causes the ground in a 20-foot radius centered on him to erupt in flames. Each creature in that area must make a DC 24 Dexterity saving throw, taking 35 (10d6) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. The flames persist, turning the area into difficult terrain for 1 minute.
Lair Actions
When fighting inside his lair, Pyrathrax can invoke the ambient magic to take lair actions. On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), Pyrathrax takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects; Pyrathrax can't use the same effect two rounds in a row:
- Fiery Vortex: A swirling vortex of fire appears in a 20-foot radius centered on a point Pyrathrax can see within 120 feet of him. Each creature in that area must succeed on a DC 24 Dexterity saving throw or take 28 (8d6) fire damage and be pulled 10 feet toward the vortex's center.
- Volcanic Fissure: A fissure opens in the ground at a point Pyrathrax can see within 120 feet of him, spewing lava in a 30-foot line that is 5 feet wide. Each creature in that line must make a DC 24 Dexterity saving throw, taking 21 (6d6) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. The fissure remains open, and the area becomes difficult terrain.
This custom fire primordial, Pyrathrax, provides a formidable challenge for high-level adventurers with his powerful area-of-effect attacks, strong multi-attack capabilities, and devastating legendary actions. His greedy and destructive nature makes him a memorable foe.
