The Olivette
Item Campaign 4Brother Oils' tiny hand-held keyboard, crowded with the symbols of countless faiths, whose healing arrives with an infernal flourish.
The Olivette
Wondrous item, instrument (bard spellcasting focus)
A bard can use the Olivette as a spellcasting focus for their bard spells. It does not require attunement.
Grace at the Bottom of the Dice. When you cast a spell that restores hit points using one or more dice, treat any 1 rolled on a healing die as the highest number on that die (a 1 on a d4 becomes 4, on a d6 becomes 6, on a d8 becomes 8). This applies separately to each die.
The Lower Choir. Whenever the Olivette alters a healing die, the spell takes on infernal trappings: guttering flames that don't burn, a shadow briefly horned or winged, the smell of sulphur, hot iron or scorched cedar, wounds closing under glowing red script that crumbles to ash, or deep brass, drums, chains and a far-below choir under the bard's music. Powerful healing can turn theatrical: stone like heated basalt, ruddy cracks of light, oppressive heat, whispered hymns in unknown tongues. None of it deals damage, ignites anything, summons creatures, changes damage type or spell school, or otherwise alters the spell.
Vessel of Many Gods. Divination about which power made or empowers it gives contradictory answers: celestial, infernal, divine, profane, consecrated, cursed, blessed and, once, "administratively disputed". New symbols are occasionally found on it; whether they were always there is uncertain.
The Olivette is a tiny hand-held keyboard of uncertain age and impossible provenance. Its ivory, bone, brass and blackwood keys produce a surprisingly enormous sound for such a small instrument.
Its casing is crowded with religious iconography: hundreds of minute symbols carved, engraved, burned, scratched and inlaid across every surface. Some belong to familiar gods. Others look like the marks of dead faiths, foreign pantheons, forgotten saints, minor spirits, philosophical cults, and powers no surviving name can be found for. Strangely, no single faith dominates.
Its healing is unquestionably effective. Its presentation is rather less reassuring. The miracles it delivers arrive with the trappings of somewhere much deeper than the room: flame, sulphur and a distant choir. They are merely how the miracle chooses to arrive.
Brother Oils plays it, and calls it "the vessel" in public.
Also known as Olivette, Vessel of Many Gods, the vessel.
