Starfall Station

Place Campaign 2 · After SkyfireCampaign 3 · The Twilight Anarchy

Starfall Station is a colossal myconid colony built across fungal towers in a vast sinkhole. In campaign 2 it was the home of Morel. In campaign 3 it became a level-19 dungeon. Beneath the colony lies a sealed vault, the Umbral Weft, which holds a Source. The colony's ancestors had cut away part of their own spirit to seal it, "gifting rage and regret to the dark soil below". A zealot faction, the Chorus of Bright Rot, listened to the whispers of The Harsh and tried to open it. The NPCs included Sovereign Glel-of-the-Stars and Spore-Warden Kizz.

Adventure notes (campaign 3)

Starfall Station: Story-Driven 2-Session Dungeon

Campaign Context

  • Level: 19 (party is extremely resourceful, has flight, access to high-level magic)
  • Villain: The Harsh — once sacrificed part of himself to bind a Source; now seeks to reclaim it.
  • Setting: Starfall Station, a colossal myconid colony built across fungal towers in a vast sinkhole. Below lies a sealed vault — the Umbral Weft — containing the Source. The Harsh whispers into the minds of zealots to unseal it.
  • Theme: Memory, corruption, ancient bargains. This is about urgency and choice — stop the zealots from completing 1-2-3 ticks or risk the Source being taken.

Arrival Scene (Session 1)

  • Atmosphere: The colony is bioluminescent, spores falling like starlight, bridges swaying over a bottomless pit. The Harsh's whispers reverberate in the minds of a growing zealot faction.
  • Prompt: The PCs arrive as the zealots perform rituals of remembrance, trying to awaken ancestral memory of what lies below.

NPCs

Sovereign Glel-of-the-Stars

  • Role: Colony ruler. Wants safety for their people, but feels the Harsh's words are half-truths.
  • Motivation: Protect colony at all costs, but open to persuasion that past seals were wise.
  • Memory: Recalls that "once we bound our rage and regret, gifting it to the dark soil below."
  • Hooks: Can reveal that the Harsh's words sound familiar — like echoes of old Sovereigns.

Chorus of Bright Rot

  • Role: Zealot cult within colony.
  • Motivation: Believe the Source below will "return us to wholeness."
  • Memory: Generational stories say the vault was sealed because "it spoke in too many voices at once."
  • Hooks: PCs can debate or expose the corruption; every success delays the ritual clock.

Spore-Warden Kizz

  • Role: Foreman of harvesters, pragmatic.
  • Motivation: Keep colony functioning; deeply skeptical of zealots.
  • Memory: Knows that their ancestors cut away part of their spirit to seal below. Fears its return will mean madness.
  • Hooks: Ally potential; provides safe routes and insider info.

The Ritual Clock (Session 1 Focus)

The Harsh advances his plan via zealots. A visible 3-segment clock:

  1. Whispers Rooted — 10% of colony enthralled; spore clouds thicken, obscuring.
  2. The First Loom Stirred — echoes of the vault awaken, shadows ripple beneath caps.
  3. The Gate Trembles — zealots nearly breach the Weft Gate.

Party must intervene socially, magically, or violently to prevent progression. Each success holds the clock; each failure (or time wasted) advances it.

Session 1 Encounters & Challenges

  1. Arrival Council: PCs must sway Sovereign Glel away from Bright Rot zealots (social intrigue, contested Persuasion/Insight vs Deception).
  2. Bridge of Shrieking Caps: Chase/combat as zealots sabotage colony bridges; hazards include spore-bursts (Confusion) and collapsing roots.
  3. Memory Ritual: PCs can participate in an ancestral remembrance rite; skill challenge to recall why the vault was sealed. Success = gain key lore, prevent a tick.

End: PCs arrive at Umbral Weft Gate; it trembles with black spore filaments. The Harsh's whispers echo from below.

Session 2: The Descent

  • Goal: Recover/secure the Source before The Harsh does.
  • Structure: Three-zone crawl (each zone holds a Spore-Key). The Harsh siphons power as a parallel clock.

Zone Guardians (examples with stat blocks)

Umbral Spore Colossus (CR 20)

  • Huge Plant, AC 20, HP 420.
  • Abilities: Legendary Resistance (3), immune to charm, frightened, necrotic.
  • Multiattack: 2 slam (30 damage each + grapple).
  • Lair Action: Collapse fungal pillars, Dex save or 45 damage + prone.
  • Mythic Trait: On dropping to 0, bursts into spores; reforms at half HP.

Shade of Self (CR 19)

  • Medium Undead (mirror of a PC).
  • Stats: AC = PC's AC, HP = PC's current HP. Uses PC's abilities/spells at half potency.
  • Mythic Twist: If not slain, PCs suffer 1 permanent level of exhaustion.

Aegis Mycelium (Vault Defender) (CR 21)

  • Colossal plant construct.

  • Legendary Actions:

    • Re-thread (swap PC positions).
    • Unspool (necrotic threads, 8d8 damage, restrain).
    • Phantom Stitch (create illusory duplicates).

The Harsh (Session 2 Final)

  • CR 42+ (adjust as needed)

  • Appearance: Shadow-wreathed, voice doubled. Half missing, reaching for wholeness.

  • Powers:

    • Mythic: Ritual siphon — 3 rounds; if completed, regains lost essence from the Source.

    • Spells: Mass Suggestion, Synaptic Static, Reality Break, Foresight.

    • Legendary Actions:

      • Whisper (DC 20 Wis save or charm 1 round).
      • Shadow Step (teleport 30m).
      • Reality Stitch (turn miss into hit or redirect spell).

Motivation (story-driven):

  • Harsh was forced to sacrifice part of himself long ago to bind the Source. His need is not just power, but wholeness. This makes him tragic: the zealots believe he is liberator, but PCs know he is reclaiming what was never meant to be his again.

Player Choice Hooks

  • PCs can:

    1. Stop zealots early (Session 1 success).
    2. Descend and destroy the Source (hard moral choice).
    3. Defeat The Harsh but let him siphon a shard (future villain arc).
    4. Bind the Source anew, but part of their own essence must be sacrificed.

Tone & Themes

  • High-level play: No petty fights. Every encounter must feel mythic, personal, and resource-draining.
  • Memory and loss: Echoes of what was sacrificed, illusions of self, zealots convinced they're remembering correctly.
  • Tragedy: The Harsh is both villain and victim.

Would you like me to expand this into a session script format (scene-by-scene with dialogue prompts and read-alouds), or should I flesh out the stat blocks fully in 5e terms (attack bonuses, damage, saves, etc.) so you can drop them straight into play?
