The Living Schematic
Lore Campaign 4Engineering knowledge carried in the blood of the Star Scorpion Guild's descendants, so that their bodies remember what their minds have forgotten.
The Living Schematic is the inherited blood-memory of The Star Scorpion Guild's engineers: shipbuilding, helm geometry and route instincts passed down through bloodlines rather than teaching. According to The Seven Journals of Mechanus, the elves of the Circle of Measure, trapped behind Herentor's Wall with their memories altered, still carried it, so their bodies remembered engineering truths their minds could not place.
The second journal records the Circle testing it directly, as inherited craft rather than prophecy: children's drawings, the stress reactions of helm-sensitive adults, inherited hand movements, dreams, compulsive designs and nervous responses to old consoles. One of the engineering clans, Clan Quezaryn, made it their speciality, alongside nerve-reading and inherited reflex. The materials the Schematic demanded could not be found on the continent, which is why the Circle accepted the dangerous Necessary Wildness (see The Great Evaporation).
When the last elves dispersed into the younger settlements, some married into other peoples and let the Schematic pass quietly on. The journals' closing challenge asks anyone told that their people were never meant for the stars why the blood still remembered the way.
The Gallon clan's descendants carry the measure without the memory. Slick is one of them.
