Divine Betrayal & Moon Timeline (Final Canon)
| Year | Event |
|---|---|
| ~1010 years ago | The Harsh is betrayed by five gods during a divine assembly, likely in the outer planes or pre-Calamity Prime. |
| ~1000 years ago | The Divine Gate is sealed after the Calamity; gods can no longer walk Eavaros. The Harsh's soul remains fragmented in the Astral and Shadowfell. |
| ~800 years ago | The Orb Weaver creates Zelyr in secret — an artificial moon — as a phylactery to preserve what remained of the Harsh. It is named Zelyr, "The Betrayed," though mistranslated to "The Betrayer." |
| ~6 years ago | The Governor's Daughter dreams, and Selarith activates the TAPs. Memory of the Harsh begins to fracture open. Divine names begin to overwrite. |
| Present Day | The TAPs near critical mass. The moon prepares to crack. The Soul Forge may be the only salvation or key to true return. |
The Soul Forge Murals — Chronology of the Betrayed
There are seven carved murals, spiraling inward like a divine mandala. Each is layered with geomancered veins, magic-reactive ore, and shifting script that resists translation unless touched by a dreamer.
I. The Balance Stands
Timeframe: 1100–1010 years ago
Scene:
The Harsh sits upon a throne of obsidian and bone, surrounded by mortal souls — not imprisoned, but guarded. Behind him, a great scale balances light and shadow.
Details:
- Duergar, elves, humans, and orcs are kneeling — all at peace.
- The gods are absent. This is a time before conflict.
- The veins in this mural form a perfect circle when viewed from above — a symbol of balance.
Caption (appears only to dreamers):
He who guards what others cast aside.
II. The Concord Plots
Timeframe: ~1010 years ago
Scene:
Five divine figures gather in a void of stars. Their faces are mirrors, their hands casting threads into a snare.
- The All-Seeing closes a book.
- The Master Maker forges a chain of astral iron.
- The Dawnbringer conjures flame to "purify."
- The Voidmother opens a hole in the Weave.
- The Orb Weaver holds back, a single thread trembling.
Hidden Detail: The Harsh's name is etched in the center — but struck through with runes of silence.
Caption:
They feared what would not bend.
III. The Divine Gate Falls
Timeframe: ~1000 years ago
Scene:
A titanic gate of crystal and gold slams shut across the heavens. Divine figures stand behind it, cast out of the world. Mortals kneel, unaware.
- The gods now wear masks — new names, new titles.
Arcane Function: This mural's surface resists scrying, illusion, or detect magic — a metaphysical echo of the Gate itself.
Caption:
No foot of god may walk Eavaros, though dreams may still pass.
IV. The Shattered Judgment
Timeframe: Pre-Calamity, but after the Gate
Scene:
In a silver-lit chamber of the outer planes, the Harsh stands bound. The five gods render judgment. The Orb Weaver steps forward with the killing thread.
- His soul is seen rising upward, unanchored.
Magical Detail: If touched by a divine soul or dreamer, the soul flickers, showing hesitation — he chose not to resist.
Caption:
He did not fall. He was taken.
V. The Birth of the Moon
Timeframe: ~800 years ago
Scene:
A moon is forged on an astral loom. The Orb Weaver works alone, her hands scorched by the act. The moon is etched with runes of sealing and pain.
- A single name is stitched into its heart: Zelyr.
Inlaid Detail: Moonmetal and star-glass, cool to the touch. The runes flicker between "Betrayer" and "Betrayed."
Caption:
What cannot be forgiven may still be remembered.
VI. The Dreamer Wakes
Timeframe: 6 years ago
Scene:
A mortal girl (the Governor's Daughter) lies in a trance, a third eye open. Beside her, a changeling (Selarith) watches in awe. Above them, a crack forms across the image of Zelyr.
- Her dream bleeds out across the wall, pulling at the threads of other murals.
Dynamic Detail:
This mural moves slightly when observed — as if still dreaming.
Caption:
When one remembers, the silence begins to break.
VII. The Loom of Souls
Timeframe: Present Day
Scene:
Thousands of souls spiral into TAPs, siphoned into a dark spire beneath the Shadowfell. In the sky, Zelyr pulses like a heart.
Selarith now stands cloaked, a figure of prophecy and danger.
- One figure in the crowd is clearly the viewer — each party member sees a version of themselves caught in the souls' spiral.
Runic Overlay:
Glyphs here shift between celestial, abyssal, and dwarven — all bearing a single word: CHOOSE.
Caption:
The seal shatters soon. You may stop it. You may open it. You may become it.
Encounter Setup: The Last Memory Awakens
Trigger:
As the final mural resolves — the players each seeing themselves within it — the forge beneath the chamber pulses with heat and begins to breathe. That's when alarms (divine tones) echo, and Nocturnal Loom monks descend in silence, led by two who sprint toward the Gates of the Regard — the lava containment fail-safe.
🛠️ Soul Forge Activation – Mechanics & Design
The Soul Forge is not activated by brute force or arcane power, but by reconstructing truth. This demands both mechanical input and narrative resonance.
💡 Activation Summary:
To unbind the TAPs, the party must:
- Touch all Seven Murals in order (Balance → Loom of Souls).
- Speak the True Name of the Harsh aloud (only possible if they have uncovered it — or approximated it via relics/dreams).
- Commit a Truth to Stone — each party member must speak a truth about themselves, witnessed by the Forge. These truths are etched into the metal walls behind them.
If all three steps are completed during the encounter, the TAPs begin to unravel.
🧩 Activation Elements – Mechanical
1. Mural Circuit
- One character must physically touch each mural in sequence.
- Requires no action per touch, but the player must move uninterrupted (Dash or Move only).
- If interrupted, the sequence resets unless someone aids them (e.g., counterspell, Hold Person, etc.).
- If touched out of order: minor soul backlash (2d10 psychic damage and loss of 1 HD).
Optional Add: The murals begin glowing in sequence when touched correctly.
2. The True Name
- If the party has discovered a fragment or full name of the Harsh through prior lore (duergar priestess, fragment of Codex Null, celestial relic, etc.), it must be spoken aloud.
If not: allow a DC 25 Arcana or Religion check to channel the name from the Forge directly. On success, the character takes 5d10 radiant damage and utters the name in a voice not their own.
If no name is spoken: the Forge will not unlock, but it leaves the TAPs vulnerable for 1 minute (allowing other bypasses — divine interference, for instance).
3. Commit a Truth
Each party member must speak a personal truth aloud and place their hand on the blackglass pedestal.
Once spoken, their words are carved into steel in the background with magical fire.
Examples:
- "I fear I am not the hero they believe me to be."
- "I would trade all justice to save one soul I love."
- "I do not believe the gods deserve their thrones."
Mechanically, no check is required. But any lie fails — and the character takes 3d12 necrotic damage as the Forge rejects the offering.
⚔️ Encounter Overlay
Loom Warrior Monks (x6)
- CR 5–6 custom stat blocks with elemental magic and silence-based aura (e.g., Zone of Silence).
- At least one elite monk with Counterspell, Misty Step, and Monk of the Cinder style flame powers.
Two Runners (Elite Monks)
Moving toward Gates of the Regard (150 ft away), which, if opened, will:
- Release lava into the Forge over 3 rounds.
- Destroy the Forge and doom the souls still trapped.
- Party can counter with environmental destruction, flight, hold spells, etc.
🎯 Resolution Outcomes
| Result | Outcome |
|---|---|
| All three activation steps completed | The TAPs unbind. Souls release. A wave of energy knocks everyone unconscious — a divine dream follows. |
| Only murals + truth, no name | TAPs partially unravel — enough to buy time. The Harsh is not restored, but something ancient takes notice. |
| Lava is released | The Forge is destroyed — the TAPs remain, but one of the monks mutters, "It is not over. The moon is coming." |
| Monks defeated, no activation | The forge dims. The murals fade. The party is left with one chance to try again elsewhere. |
If the Taps are not destroyed, the Harsh will have additional power when he breaks his confinement
