The First Thorn House
Place Campaign 4Sandwater Slough's temple of the First Thorn, licensed for sanctioned punishment and penance.
The First Thorn House is the temple of the First Thorn (Loviatar; see The New Gods) in The Gutterline Warrens of Sandwater Slough, set into an older stone block near The Tallow Stair. It is a compact stone chapel built inward rather than upward and deliberately hard to navigate: narrow passages funnel visitors toward a central chamber, where a thorn-wrapped scourge rests on a basalt plinth. The walls are scored with shallow lash marks, some ancient, some recent. Its iconography is thorns, scourges, lash marks and binding cords.
Civic contract. The house is licensed to oversee the rites of punishment, penance and suffering that the city formally sanctions, and is consulted whenever pain itself is the instrument of judgement or deterrence.
Also known as First Thorn House.
