Lore Campaign 4The long, brutally enforced labour contracts that replaced slavery in Sandwater Slough.
Sandwater Slough was once a slavery hub, infamous along the coast. Officially those days are over: slavery has been abolished, and The Barons' Council used the abolition to justify reducing the worship of the Bound Martyr (Ilmater), a god of endurance and imposed burden. Unofficially, and without anyone saying so, the stigma has simply shifted.
Indenture contracts in the Slough are long and their enforcement is brutal. Prostitution, gangs and debt bondage thrive, and the law is not on the side of the indentured. The meatpacking quarter of The Northern District, around Marrowhook Yard, still carries the stink of the old practices: blood, fear and bodies that disappear quietly. The Low Lantern Archive stores old indenture agreements among its expired contracts. On Olive Press Row the young barrel sealer Nessa works harder than she perhaps should and will not discuss her contract.
