The Restless Expanse
Place Campaign 2Campaign 4A desert that was once the grassland home of the Dwarves.
The Restless Expanse is a colossal desert west of Sandwater Slough. It was once grassland, home to the desert dwarves and a trade route linking the Slough to their holds. Its desertification and the dwarves' disappearance are variously dated: sixteen years before 1034 PC (Scabard, 2022), thirty years before 1047 PC (the campaign 4 party), and "nearly thirty years ago" (the campaign 4 outline). What set it off was the fall of Herentor's veil in 1019 PC. Since then no caravans have returned, only dunes, salt scars and rumours of a calamity among the dwarves of the plains. Shore Market in Creatis is its gateway.
In campaign 4 the party learned from the Hall of Navigators beneath the Slough that the desertification is an acceleration of an ancient elven working, set off by the lifting of Herentor's Wall in 1019 PC: The Great Evaporation. Ashwell, a village east of Hysteria, was cut off by the desert twenty to thirty years ago.
