Introduction by Thalorien Windspeak, Author and Archaeologist Extraordinaire
Greetings, gentle reader! If this tome lies open in your hands, then you, like me, are a seeker of Truth—Truth with a capital 'T,' mind you, for ordinary truth scarcely merits our attention. Over the course of many an expedition across the grand realms of the Eastern Dottenland and Northern Burg, I have unearthed splendours most men dare not dream of. Ah, what a life I've led! Accompanying me in those endeavours were men of mettle and wit, all captivated by the intoxicating aroma of discovery.
Now, I present to you my life's work, a tapestry of barrows and battlegrounds, marinated in the rich sauce of personal anecdotes and bold exaggerations. Critics may call me outlandish or even dishonest, but it's not accuracy I'm after, it's essence. It's the gleaming nugget of awe that transforms a mundane clump of dirt into a story, a legend, a lesson.
So, open these pages and wander with me through landscapes fraught with peril and mystery, where the veil between the world of the living and the realm of the dead is but a gossamer thread. You may find my claims incredible. Good! For the world is a place of endless incredulity, and to limit oneself to the believable is to live half a life.
And so, without further ado, let us journey together into the annals of history, replete with the arcane, the tragic, and the utterly inexplicable. Prepare to have your senses titillated, your beliefs challenged, and your maps irrevocably redrawn.
Foreword
In a world brimming with the arcane and the marvellous, the scholarly pursuit of unearthing our ancient and tragic past serves a purpose few could fully comprehend. As one of the esteemed Mages of the 3, I Habir of Xinstock, am privy to knowledge esoteric and forbidden. Yet, even among my troves of arcane secrets, the chronicles penned by Thalorien Windspeak hold a singular place.
This tome serves as a cautionary tale, filled with artefacts and battlegrounds that bear witness to our collective follies and ambitions. Windspeak's penchant for the dramatic and the embellished adds a certain je ne sais quoi that elevates this work from mere academia to storytelling. Read with an open heart and a critical mind, and may your magical intuitions be guided by the ethereal echoes of our shared past.
Entry I: The Fields of Wyrmfall
Ah, what a stupendous undertaking it was to unearth the remains in the Fields of Wyrmfall! Among petrified scales and fangs, I found talismans of uncertain origin but undeniable power.
Entry II: Barrows of Bleakwood
Having braved the treacherous forests of Bleakwood, I found myself before tumuli most mysterious. Relics abounded, but one must take care, for the spectres here are loath to part with their treasures.
Entry III: The Sanguine Plains
In my years of exploration, never had I stepped upon earth so thirsty as in the Sanguine Plains. Excavations revealed arms and armaments, a tribute to the ceaseless conflicts that have consumed the land.
Entry IV: Twilight Glade
Upon my journey in Eastern Dottenland, I chanced upon a copse bathed in perennial dusk. Here, I unearthed artefacts, whose radiance dimmed the very sun, a testament to an age of unsung valour.
Entry V: Whispering Hollow
The Northern expanses of Burg led me to a chilling sepulchre. It took a fortnight to break the icy seals of the crypts. What I found were trinkets and tomes that defy the most seasoned scholars.
Entry VI: The Riven Peak
Scaling the treacherous cliffs to the ruins of the once mighty citadel, I unearthed scrolls of bygone magicks and fractured sceptres; artefacts that bore witness to a tale of downfall most lamentable.
Entry VII: Vale of Echoes
Ah, the Vale! It took no fewer than twenty men to dig through the soil, so thick with sorrow. We unearthed burial urns that reverberated with ethereal cries when struck.
Entry VIII: Duskfall Ruins
With a team of stouthearted men, I excavated the once bustling arcane academies. Ah, the smell of parchments yet fresh! The spells contained therein, a cornucopia of ancient wisdom.
Entry IX: Tomb of the Moonless Night
After a perilous trek, I arrived at a chamber sealed by shadows. My heart fluttered as I lifted the onyx lid, revealing an effigy of the long-forgotten monarch within.
Entry X: The Grey Mare Meadow
How picturesque it appeared at first sight! Yet, as we delved, it was clear this was no mere meadow. Suits of armour, tarnished but noble, bore mute testimony to a joust most tragic.
Entry XI: The Ironclad Hills
The rugged landscape yielded artefacts of cold steel and sterner stuff. A treasure trove for the intrepid, and a cautionary tale writ upon rusted blades.
Entry XII: Abyssal Chasm
Ah, the descent was perilous, a vertical sojourn into the mouth of the underworld. The chasm's depths yielded gemstones that seemed to consume the very light around them.
Entry XIII: Sorrow's Reach
In Burg, atop sorrow-sculpted peaks, I found altars and effigies dedicated to mourning and memory. The air was so thick with melancholy, it made the eyes water.
Entry XIV: Fen of Forgotten Souls
A wretched place, requiring boots and bravery. We unearthed trinkets so ensnared in vine and root they appeared as one with the fen itself.
Entry XV: The Pinnacle of Despair
The temple's ruins yet harboured relics of a spirituality twisted by sorrow. Ornate chalices and incense burners told a tale of faith turned to folly.
Entry XVI: Sundered Stone Fields
Rocks split asunder, I found shards imbued with lingering arcana. Ah, the dangers of tampering with forces beyond human reckoning!
Entry XVII: The Cursed Shore
The sand itself seemed to recoil as we dug, unearthing barnacle-encrusted sabres and ghostly figureheads that haunt me to this very day.
Entry XVIII: Veil of the Damned
Amidst stone circles and unhallowed ground, I found twisted relics and scrolls of unspeakable rites. A place of dread and darker secrets, most certainly.
Entry XIX: Moonlit Grove
In this ethereal grove, I unearthed swords of silver and stardust. They lay arranged in constellations, a celestial burial that hints at cosmological concerns.
Entry XX: Halls of Valiance
Below ground, in the catacombs, lay stone sarcophagi of knights and nobles. Amongst them, artefacts of heraldry and valour, gathering dust yet unyielding.
Entry XXI: The Bloodforge
The forges yet stood, and amongst the slag and soot, we found weapons inscribed with runes of power and potency. Their value in gold is as aught compared to their historical import.
Entry XXII: Wailing Heights
Ah, the perilous climb was rewarded by the discovery of cliffside tombs. Yet as we took our samples, spectral hands clawed at the air, as if seeking to reclaim what was lost.
Entry XXIII: Serpent's Coil
We excavated runic tablets, a serpentine path in stone and soil. They spoke of battles waged and oaths forsaken, in an alphabet most enigmatic.
Entry XXIV: Ashen Wastes
Sifting through ash and char, I discovered talons and fangs, calcified yet fearsome. A grim testament to draconic devastation, and a warning to those who would wake such slumbering wrath.
