Rookfall
Place Campaign 3The capital of the Former Dottenland, now Potenxia; it replaced Nafen, the old capital.
Rookfall is the capital of Potenxia (formerly The Dottenland), lying in perpetual dusk under The Veil of Letherna. The drow monarchy fell there in a revolution about twenty years before 1040 PC, and a council of ministers now governs from The Sovereign Hall. It has a prestigious agricultural college, where Thoren Blackthorn once dreamed of studying. The party first came to Rookfall in January 2024, chasing Lord Cedric, whose Eightfold cell met in a teahouse in the Fogsteps.
The revolutionary ministers the party learned of:
- Aric Windmere (human), Commerce and Recovery: rebuilding The Tides and the artisan guilds.
- Yelena Greenroot (halfling), Agriculture and Commons.
- Tharivol Liadon (elf), Justice and Equity.
- Bruna Ironhand (dwarf), Urban Development and Infrastructure.
- Valeria Sunblossom (human), Cultural Affairs and Education.
- Gaius Emberfall (human), Mystical Affairs and Arcane Studies.
- Kethra Moorwalker, Foreign Affairs.
- Baldric Stonefist, Minister of the Inquisition.
Nafen. Before Rookfall, the Dottenland's capital on the same site was Nafen, by far its largest settlement, with a Shwazen culture; Theo was schooled there. On the old sea route out of the island it was a port of call a few days' sail beyond the other Dottenland ports, on the way round the Cape of Serenity to Slatistok. Rookfall replaced it as the capital, and as the name on the map.
Halstock boasted that "Rookfall's council dances to a tune they haven't even heard."
Scabard notes

Rookfall, draped in the mystic twilight of the Veil of Letherna, stands as a city reborn from its own ashes and the ashes of the world's calamities. Twenty-six years ago, the cataclysm known as the Skyfire ravaged the seas, decimating fishing fleets globally and severing the arteries of trade that once pulsed with vibrant life. In the wake of this devastation, Rookfall has slowly knitted itself back together, its docks now cautiously buzzing as trade tiptoes back to its waters.
By day, the Veil Of Letherna, a magical shroud cast long ago by the drow to protect their delicate kin from the sun's glare, enfolds the city in a protective embrace. This eternal gloaming is both a safeguard and a legacy of the drow monarchy, which fell two decades past when the underclass, fuelled by a fervent desire for freedom, overturned the ancient regime in a revolution that still echoes through the stone and spirit of the city.
As the three moons ascend each night, piercing the Veil's shadow with their soft luminescence, Rookfall awakens anew. The drow, once rulers of this land, now walk the moonlit paths as equals, their eyes reflecting the moons' twin gleams. These celestial bodies are beacons of hope and harbingers of the night's grace, allowing life in Rookfall to flourish under their gentle watch.
The city itself is a tapestry of history and resilience. The Sovereign Hall, a palatial symbol transformed into the cradle of the new "government," stands as a testament to the city's ability to reinvent its power structures. The once-opulent halls now resonate with the voices of debate and the footsteps of those who now steward the city's future.
The coastal district, The Tides, once alive with the cries of fishmongers and the bustle of sailors, now holds a more subdued atmosphere as it rebuilds from the Skyfire's wrath. Here, the returning traders exchange whispers of the sea's lingering anger and the hope of restored abundance.
The Valley, a bastion of Rookfall's resilience, displays the city's commitment to life and growth. Its fields, which once fed the opulent tables of drow nobility, now serve the communal spirit of a free populace, their yields a shared bounty for all.
In the north, Hillview stands sentinel, its gaze cast over the city below. The Panopticon Zenith, once a looming symbol of surveillance, now serves a higher purpose as a haven for the All-Seeing, whose watchful eye is said to guide and protect the citizenry from atop its hallowed grounds.
Hearthstone Quarters and Morrowfield epitomise the duality of Rookfall, a city where the divine mingles with the mercantile, where every transaction is touched by the ethereal, and where the hum of commerce is a chant to both prosperity and the divine.
In the southeastern reaches of Rookfall lies Fogsteps, a district defined by its winding stairways and stone pathways that artfully navigate a rocky outcropping. Frequently enshrouded in sea mist, these slick and slippery steps offer veiled views of Sovereign Hall, creating an atmosphere of mystique. Fogsteps combines natural beauty with architectural wonder where homes and shops are nestled into the rock, though treacherous to the foot of the unwary.
As Rookfall continues to emerge from its twilight, it is a city balanced on the edge of past and future, where the dark history of the drow is just one shadow among many, and where the light of the moons beckons the city towards a future as luminous and promising as the celestial bodies themselves.
