Clef Neverthirst

Clef was a vampire and the brother of Saber (Saber Netherthirst) of The Broken Bones. Saber left him to protect the city inside the bubble in The Red Wastes, promising that once they had the Fork "it'll be like nothing happened".

His diary recorded the delights of living under a red sky and ten years of night, his discovery that time passed differently inside the bubble, the imps that powered the place, and his uneasy hunting of a scarce population. He came to resent that Saber had got the better deal for extended life, and he slid into madness. On the barracks wall he wrote in blood, in Draconic, "it never ends brother, Neverthirst".

When the party entered the city in 1034, Olaf dragged Clef outside, where he burned to dust. Scribble kept the dust. The pirates' letter addressed to "C" (The Undercommon notebook) was meant for him.

Clef was Saber's younger brother. He wore a well-worn amulet engraved with a lantern half-veiled in mist, which he seemed to have held often, and his pockets held torn scraps of paper, almost impossible to reassemble. The letter told him to keep an eye on the locals for Saber, who had promised Meradana that once they fetched the Fork "from the new world" they could undo everything; fifteen years was nothing to the likes of them. His diary went on to describe an unspoken alliance with the imps, his growing caution in hunting now that he had too many "mouths to feed" from too little stock, his wish that his findings could reach Saber, and his view that Lady Meradana, like the brothers, had made her deal without thinking of the consequences. As the pages went on, the writing grew guttural, frenzied and mad.
