The pirates' letter mentions a captive wizard whose "brain is mush"; this appears to have been Longhand. He was recovered: after the chest was returned to Vistas Landing, he and the Vicera began a romance, and he took charge of the Bragglands–Vistas Landing embassy, keeping the Therian Confederacy informed, and of diplomatic relations over the forge at Austerity. In 1034 he wrote Scribble a letter of introduction to The Rookery College, saying his apprentice had surpassed him. His tower in The City of Birds is kept by Scribble's Magen.
