Scribble is named after the sound of pen on paper, of quill on parchment and ink from pot. When he tries to say his full name, it comes out as the sound of a quill dipped in ink and a flourished signature.

Origins

Scribble's flock roosted in a wizards' tower in the Therian Confederacy, where kenku are treated a little better than elsewhere, which is how his roost escaped a life of crime. He mastered script faster than the rest of his roost and spent his chick days as a courtier, one of the best notetakers the meetings had seen. Time among functionaries and delegates gave him a taste for finery unusual in a kenku.

The tower's apprentices taught him to write magic as part of his duties, and so, by proxy, to cast it. It began as a joke, but his aptitude shone and he was taken in for general tutoring.

The envoy

Scribble came to The Bragglands with the Therian diplomatic envoy to the South as Master Longhand's scroll holder, note-taker, dinner-getter and potion quartermaster. When Longhand was lost, Scribble was left to fill those big, floppy wizard boots as best he could.

He remains broadly loyal to the Therians but is endlessly curious: he'll do almost anything for a new spell scroll, believing enough spells will reveal the path to lift the curse of the Kenku. He has seen fly cast and yearns to cast it himself. He respects the Weave as a strength to be used carefully, as he was taught.

The spellbook

Scribble's pride and joy began as a sheaf of post-it notes and has grown into a real volume of bookmarks, dog-ears and stapled pouches of reagents, all written in a cypher and shorthand only he can follow. A long chain along the spine lets him sling it over a shoulder or loop it across his torso.

Deeds

Campaign 2

Scribble is an Order of Scribes wizard. His spellbook came alive in the first session, and he named it Paige; it later read a decayed journal in Mechanus, grabbed a contract in Dis, and turned out to hold Infernal spells. His robe is The Starlight Cloak, which grew into The Starfeather Cloak, and his familiar Varez (also spelled Vares) often perches on his staff.

  • Got high in the seedy part of Luggard Dror and missed several interesting books.
  • Kept the pact document signed by Thekallan that the party was handed in the Underdark.
  • Took Disintegrate and Sunbeam after the ball.
  • Gained the feat Tolerated of Quorlinn: a 30-foot fly speed and Shadow's Door from Quorlinn, god of the kenku, who lives in Finchnest. Scribble came to see Quorlinn as his godson and himself as a "dad to a deity", and was proud and concerned when Quorlinn's scripture began calling him the Deceiver. Scribble created or awakened Quorlinn, and Quorlinn is the god known in campaign 3 as the Feathered Deceiver.
  • Was admitted to The Rookery College on Master Longhand's letter, took up residence at Castle Scribble in The City of Birds, and left a Magen there to help Woodchop with the cult of Quorlinn.
  • Pursued the three-part Pact Primeval spell (Sunder Infernal Pact), which could break SAM's contract, the curse on the kenku, and Duhm's contract with Orcus.
  • Counterspelled Thekko's 9th-level counterspell with his own 9th-level slot.
  • Created his own spell, Scribble's Irrepressible Incubation, and planned the defence of Origin Island before The Siege of Talonkeep.
  • Months after the siege, tracked down Ebony, left simple by reviving SAM, and restored his intellect with a risky casting of Wish.

Notes

Teleportation circles. Scribble knew the sigils of seven circles: Wizard Longhand's tower (Castle Scribble); the Technical College in Luggard Dror; the courtyard of the Governor's estate in Midzen Id; the conservatory in Mahovana (The Mahovana Conservatory); Summers End in Bosia; the Vicera's chambers in Vistas Landing; and the bottom of the control tower in Branestone.

Contingency. If a spell he failed to save against landed on him, he would dimension door 500 feet up into the air.

Spells lost. Create Magen (7th level) and gust of wind (2nd level), for two long rests.

Quorlinn. He kept a shrine to Quorlinn in the east of Vistas Landing.
