Reefwatch

Place Campaign 2 · After Skyfire

The diplomatic and commercial capital of the Chitin Isles, a rich town on a claw of rock and chitin.

Reefwatch is the diplomatic and commercial capital of The Chitin Isles, a little over a day's easy travel east along a well-kept road from The Span. Its governor is the halfling Scotrik, and the head of its guard is Khahmed Dhistod. Its colours are orange and yellow.

The town stands on a jutting, claw-shaped knob of rock off the coast, its stone buildings set into the side of a massive outcrop of chitin. When the tide is in, a roped ferry crosses to it; when the tide is out, a road appears beneath the waves, risky for carts and goods but easy enough on foot. A small tower on the far point looks east across the smaller islands, and on the larger central island a keep flies its flag over the second bailey. Seabirds circle the towers. Terraced gardens with little market stalls begin about halfway up, and the town feels rich: residents take their leisure in the sea air much of the day, and even the poor seem to have time to themselves.

  • The docks curve from the east round to the tip of the northern point, mostly below the town proper. Warehouses and slums are screened from view by a high canopy of greenery in every shade from lime to deep forest green. The transport piers at the northern end feel like another world from the commerce a few yards south. The dockmaster is the gnome Venwyn Twisthold, and the ferries The Cordata and The Digitata work from here.
  • Taverns: The Radiant Reprieve on the northern point; The Cat and Cup by the ramps into town; The Staff and Octopus above the docks; and The Bludgeoning Bucket, a fight club by the levee.
  • The Stormpits, an open-air prison carved into the southern face of the rock.
  • A small temple of Tymora, above a catacomb.

Ferries take about ten days to come round from Luggard Dror, and the archaeological dig at The Ruins of Oghma's Academy lies two days out.

The party reached Reefwatch in 1034 PC and met the dockmaster Venwyn and Governor Scottrik (Scotrik), whom their notes sum up as a jerk. All sea travel was halted at the time over supplies missing from the docks. Later that year Meradana of the pirates set up a store in Reefwatch.
