The Divine Gate
Lore Campaign 1Campaign 3The seal that keeps the gods out of Eavaros, anchored by the Sources.
The Divine Gate was sealed after the Calamity so that gods can no longer walk Eavaros, though dreams may still pass. It is anchored by the Sources, which the Shackles protect. The Nocturnal Loom sought to destroy it; The Orb Weaver waits behind it; The Elemental Compass bears its symbol at the centre. In September 2025 the party learned that it is locked in place as an anchor because the last god was turned into obsidian and scattered across the stars, and that the gods who built it had grown proud. The last gods to walk the world before it closed were the Shattered Mirror, the Celestial Weaver, the All-Seeing, The Infinite Scroll and the Whispered Betrayer.
Where it stands
On the Wheel of the planes, the Gate is a barrier around the Material Plane, its two echoes (the Feywild and the Shadowfell) and the inner planes, and between the upper and lower outer planes. Gods cannot cross it physically: they cannot walk into the Prime, its echoes or the elemental planes, nor pass between the upper and lower planes. Mortals can still travel from the Prime to all of those planes. See the Wheel.
Origins
The Gate dates from the end of The Calamity. In campaign 1, Cirella's notes record that it was put in place to stop mortals rising against the gods; divine vestiges exist in the world. The Soul Forge murals show a titanic gate of crystal and gold slamming shut across the heavens, about a thousand years ago, with the gods cast out behind it and wearing new masks and names (The New Gods). The obsidian that anchors it is the remains of Mol'maroch The Nethershaper, the Calamity's "last god".
Campaign 2
In 1034 PC the party feared that Duhm wanted The Damaged Scrying Orb to weaken the barrier at the Divine Gate, or to bring on a Great Modron March.
Campaign 3
- A prophecy found at Halstock speaks of an "arbiter of twilight" whom "the gatekeeper of the divine threshold shall recognise".
- Brond the Colossus sought a compass to map the Gate's anchors.
- Over the campaign the party held Sources attuned to the Celestial Weaver (Mystra), the Shattered Mirror (Beshaba), the Infinite Scroll, the Eternal Sentinel (Helm) and "Chained Oblivion" (Tharizdun).
After campaign 3
The Harsh fell in the finale, and the Gate stayed intact. It is now held by just one Source; the others are slowly returning to their gods, a process expected to take about a century.
Where gods cannot go. Living gods cannot physically enter the Prime, its echoes (the Feywild and the Shadowfell), the elemental planes, the neutral outer planes (Mechanus, Limbo, the Outlands and Sigil), the Astral Sea or the Ethereal. Mortals can still reach all of them from the Prime. The one way a god crosses is in death: a dead god's corpse is sent to the Ethereal.
A rumour that Arborea's elven gods are exempt from the Gate is false.
Also known as Divine Gate, the gate, Divine Threshold.
