The King In Yellow
NPC Campaign 1Campaign 2Campaign 4A myth among those of the southern continents that has come to prominence over last 16 years.
The King in Yellow is a fiendish power of wishes and contracts. In 1034 PC he was "a myth among those of the southern continents that has come to prominence over the last 16 years", which puts his rise at about the time of The Skyfire and the fall of Herentor's Wall. People described him to the campaign 2 party as "an old wish of a god that could grant any wish". A book titled The King in Yellow, written in Abyssal, was among the books the party found in Luggard Dror's library.
Campaign 1
After the campaign, the players learned that Ozaris, the pigeon that lived in the Fatemakers' bar, had become a demigod, "god king of the vault of the heavens", through a card (the 10 of Clubs) from the King in Yellow's deck.
Campaign 2
His contracts drove much of campaign 2:
- Burzum was his warlock. Heishen the Deathless was offered a pact for the location of a Shard of Obsidian about ten years before 1034.
- Every member of The Broken Bones, the pirate party, had a monkey's-paw deal with him (except perhaps Duhm). Glix and Glux used his power to take Wildharbour from Agrot; there he was remembered as "someone dressed in yellow who disappeared into the crowd".
- Thekallan The Vigilant enacted contracts on his behalf.
- In December 2022 (real time) Olaf tore up the contracts of Heishen, Glix, Glux, Karkos and the Red Bubble. The party kept Thekallan's contract as leverage. Olaf came away holding the King in Yellow's hand, the only thing that could end the contracts (see List of Contracts).
Campaign 4
Thirteen years later his paper still binds Sandwater Slough:
- Every image in Uldrick's infernal book from the Low Lantern Archive represents a King in Yellow contract.
- The Baron of the Slough sealed his own King in Yellow contract in the Golden Envelope. He made the deal to save the city and to end slavery, and he wants the second copy destroyed.
- The deals are struck through a white-skinned devil about five feet tall.
- The Baron believes the King in Yellow is defeated and that his contract is now held by someone unknown; he passes on an unproven rumour that Asmodeus bought it. Separately, the contract for the corruption under the city is owned by Asmodeus.
- The seal on the envelope resembles the Star Scorpion Guild symbols on Slick's bracelet.
The Shrine House in Midzen Id has a small shrine to the King in Yellow among its many alcoves.
Also known as King, The King in Yellow, King in Yellow.
